The world’s first colour based blood glucose test kit
Out of all the developed nations in the world, Singapore has the second-highest proportion of diabetics. While it can be a very manageable metabolic disorder, it does come at a very steep cost.
Made entirely out of paper, Smart Drop is a low-cost testing kit that can be used easily and at your own convenience. Smart Drop uses testing sheets coated in a glucose-sensitive pigment, that changes color according to the amount of glucose in your blood. The accompanying mobile app then scans the color of the pigment and provides all the necessary test results.
Health advice is also provided based on your test results and the platform also provides you the option to restock the kit whenever necessary. In addition to being able to test for three different kidney related diseases, Smart Drop will make testing blood glucose levels much cheaper, simpler and more accessible to the people of Singapore and the world.
Conceptualised in Equator, a satellite office for technology and innovation in Temasek Polytechnic, and alongside Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Life Science, Smart Drop was created. It started as a prototype concept, but soon gained attention along the way. It was also picked up by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Programme Office.
